Hit and Run in Philadelphia: How to Get Your Car Fixed

Your car got hit and the other driver took off. Here's what to do next in Philadelphia, which coverage pays for the repair, and what you'll owe.

First, report it

Call the police. Even if no one was hurt, a police report is what your insurance company will ask for first, and many policies require you to report a hit and run quickly, so notify your insurance company right away too. Write down the time, the place, any partial plate, the make and color of the other car, and names of anyone who saw it. Check whether nearby homes or businesses have cameras.

Take photos before you move anything

Get wide shots of the scene and close-ups of every dent, scrape and paint transfer. Paint left on your car can help identify the other vehicle.

Which coverage pays for the repair?

  • Collision coverage is usually what fixes your car after a hit and run. You'll pay your deductible.
  • Uninsured motorist coverage in Pennsylvania generally covers injuries, not damage to your car, so don't count on it for the body work.
  • No collision coverage? If you only carry liability, the repair is likely out of pocket unless the police find the other driver.
  • If the other driver is identified later, your insurer can go after them (called subrogation), and you may get your deductible back.

Will my rates go up?

Pennsylvania limits when insurers can raise rates for accidents you didn't cause. A hit and run where you weren't at fault generally shouldn't be held against you, but ask your agent how your policy treats it.

Getting it repaired

You choose the body shop, not your insurance company. Bring the car in and we'll write the estimate, work with your adjuster, and handle any hidden damage found once the car is apart.
