Can My Insurance Force Me to Use Their Body Shop?

Your insurance company recommended a body shop, but do you have to use it? Here's what Philadelphia drivers need to know about their right to choose their own repair shop.

After an accident, your insurance company may recommend a body shop from its preferred network or direct repair program. The recommendation can sound like a requirement, especially when you are already dealing with a damaged vehicle and a claim. But the choice of repair shop belongs to you.

You Have the Right to Choose Your Repair Shop

No. In Pennsylvania, as in most states, an insurance company generally cannot force you to use a specific body shop. You have the legal right to select the repair facility you trust, regardless of which businesses your insurer recommends.

Your insurer may explain the benefits of using a preferred shop, but you do not have to accept that recommendation. You can take your vehicle to an independent shop and still use your applicable insurance coverage.

Why Insurance Companies Recommend Preferred Shops

Many insurers maintain preferred-shop networks, sometimes called direct repair programs. Shops in these programs agree to certain procedures, pricing arrangements, reporting requirements, or repair-volume expectations.

These arrangements can make claims easier or less expensive for the insurance company. That does not automatically mean the recommended shop is the best choice for your vehicle or for you. The insurer's priorities may include controlling claim costs and processing repairs quickly, while your priority is receiving a safe, complete, high-quality repair.

An Independent Shop Can Still Work With Your Insurance

Choosing your own body shop does not mean you must manage the insurance claim alone. Independent shops like Autoshow Collision Center work directly with all insurance companies to process claims, document damage, communicate with adjusters, and submit supplemental estimates when hidden damage is discovered.

You can tell the insurance company where you want the vehicle repaired. The shop can then coordinate with the insurer on the approved repair plan and required claim documentation.

Your Shop Should Be Your Advocate

When you choose your own repair facility, you can select a team that answers to you rather than one chosen through the insurance company's preferred network. A good independent shop explains the damage, recommends the repairs needed to restore the vehicle properly, and keeps you informed throughout the process.

Collision damage is not always limited to what is visible from the outside. Once repairs begin, technicians may find damage behind bumpers, panels, or structural components. Your chosen shop should document those findings and advocate for the complete repairs your vehicle requires.

Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Shop

  • Does the shop work with your insurance company?
  • Will it provide a written estimate and explain the repair plan?
  • Does it inspect for structural and hidden collision damage?
  • How will it communicate updates during the repair?
  • Does it stand behind its workmanship?

Choose a repair shop based on experience, communication, equipment, reputation, and the quality of its work—not simply because an insurer supplied its name.
